How do you slow down your time experience?
For many people, life rushes by when they reach working age. Every day it’s the same flash routine of waking up, going to work, coming back from work, and sleeping. No wonder you will ask yourself, “How did I get old so quickly? Where did all this go?”
The problem lies in the routine work. The human mind has this habit called quenching. Anything that repeats itself over and over again does not record the memory simply because it is not worth paying attention to.
So how can we slow down our experience of time and not let our lives fly by?
The answer lies in developing mindfulness – a heightened state of awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. But if you can’t already, you can start practicing the 3 magical bedtime questions.
If you’re lying in bed at night, ask and answer these three questions before you fall asleep:
1. What am I thankful for today?
2. What am I looking forward to tomorrow?
3. What would I like to dream about tonight?
Why do I call these simple questions magical? Well, let me explain the logic behind this to you. The first question requires that you think through your day to find something to be grateful for. Not only will you find something to be thankful for, but you’ll have remembered your entire day as well. In neuro-linguistic programming, we call this the recap experience. Imagine packing your daily experiences in a bottle, putting a cap on it and labeling it “The Day I Met Jenny”. Having a lot of these bottles in your head will sort your memories into significant experiences rather than as one big lump called “My Years of Work – 20 to 50 Years Old”.
The second question requires that you look ahead in time and imagine what will happen tomorrow. When you can look forward to something, there is a natural anticipation and drive. You will be motivated as soon as you wake up. It will be the first thing that comes to mind.
The third question reveals your innermost desires because, of course, we choose to dream about what we want and desire. This illustrates our direction and our goal.
Do the 3 magical bedtime questions every night and time will slow down. You will remember your life more and have more clarity on your mind to do what matters before your time runs out.
